Yes, as a result of meiosis, the chromosome number is halved to produce 4 haploid cells. In reproductive gonads, these are gamete cells with 'n' chromosome number. Two gametes with haploid number of chromosomes fuse in the process of fertilisation and form a zygote with 2n chromosome number. Zygote undergoes mitosis repeatedly to form an embryo thus restoring 2n chromosome number in all the cells of an embryo.
