Both soap and detergent are some type of salts. What is the difference between them ? Describe in brief the cleansing action of soap. Why do soaps not form lather in hard water ? List two problems that arise due to the use of detergents instead of soaps.

actually it question is slightly incorrect as it is the detergent that does not form lather in hard water .soaps actually forms lather with hard water

soaps :- 1) they are sodium salts of the long chain carboxylic acids.
2) they are biodegradable.
3) they not cause pollution
4) soaps have relatively weak cleansing action

Detergents :- 1) they are sodium salts of the long benzene sulphonic acids.
2) they are non biodegradable.
3) they cause pollution
4) detergents have a strong cleansing action
