Both steel and chalk are solids.What properties of steel make it more useful for making bridges than chalk?

steel is a metal, whereas a chalk is a non-metal. since it is the property of a metal to be strong, and non-brittle , that is , unable to be broken when hammered, they are used. chalks, being non metals, are brittle and can easily broken if a single vehicle would pass from a bridge made of it.
