In mitosis, a cell undergoes division involving the copying of genetic material or DNA.

For a unicellular organism, mitosis is for creating a copy of itself, or reproducing, as only one cell divides; whereas for a multicellular organism, one of the organism's trillions of cells divides, and it is for the purpose of growth, or repair of worn out cells.
