1 box = 72 apples

12 x 6 = 72 (6 dozen)

8 apples are good one in each dozen

then remaining apples (rotten apples ) =72 -8x6

= 24 (rotten apples )

= 24/72 is the fraction of rotten apples

The answer is 1/3

GIVEN

Box contains 72 apples;8 in each dozen are good.

TO FIND

The fraction of box containing rotten apples.

SOLUTION

We can simply solve the above problem as follows;

It is given,

Total number of apples in the box = 72

We know that,

1 dozen = 12 units

Number of dozen from 72 apples = 72/12 = 6 dozen

It is given that 8 apples are good in every dozen

Therefore,

Number of rotten apples in each dozen = 12-8 = 4 apples

Total number of rotten apples = 4 × 6 = 24 apples

Now,

Fraction = part/whole

Fraction of box containing rotten apples = rotten apples/Total number of apples.

= 24/72

= 1/3

Hence, The answer is 1/3
