APA’s Public Interest Directorate has release a new video, “Boys Don’t Cry” which explores the negative impact of stereotypical expectations of masculinity on boys and men, including pressure on young boys to prove their masculinity to their peers and in our culture. The video is part of Public Interest’s video series on Public Interest related issues. Our next video will focus on smoking cessation.

This video focuses on a young African-American boy and his struggles with negative self-images. He is having flashbacks of his father teaching him how to fight, other boys in his neighborhood wanting him to participate in a fight, and conflicting emotions he has while playing with a traditionally “girl" toy. We hope this contributes to changing the landscape in which masculinity is interpreted and expressed, erasing the traditional stigma of what it means to be a man, and helping boys and men express a range of emotions. Check out "Boys Don’t Cry."
