Gray matter is mainly composed of cytons of nerve fibres. Myelinated nerve fibre forms the white matter. The outer cortex of the brain is formed of gray matter which is called cerebral cortex. The cortex is gray because nerves in this area lack the insulation that makes most other parts of the brain appear to be white. The cerebral cortex contains sensory areas and motor areas. Sensory areas receive input from the thalamus and process information related to the senses. It is important for processing different types of sensory information. while in the spinal cord we can see inner gray and outer white matter..
