Limbic system: It is the neuronal circuitory connected with the emotional behaviour and the motivational drives or cognition. Originally, Limbic system (Lit. Limbus means border or lip) was related to only inner edge of the cerebral cortex in the medial and temporal region of the brain which is flared like a wish bone. It now primarily includes hypothalamus, amygdala, hippocampus, septum, parts of thalamus, epithalamus, paraolfactory area, etc.

Hippocampus is an elongated medial part of the temporal cortex that is folded inward and upward forming ventral surface of inferior horn of lateral ventricle. Almost every sensory information activates one part or the other part of it. Hippocampus distributes the same to other parts of the limbic system. It is also hyper-excitable resulting in and connecting towards hallucinations of various types. Hippocampus is important in transformation of short term memory and long term memory.

Amygdala is almond-shaped complex of nuclei located immediately below the cortex of the medial anterior pole of each temporal lobe. It is well connected with the hypothalamus and other parts of the limbic system. It mainly controls moods, anger, rage, aggression, fear and other types of behaviour. Amygdala also controls the movements well connected with olfaction and eating, circling movements, bending movements, rhythmic movements and several hypothalamus functions.

Septum is medial part on either the cerebral hemisphere (comprising paraolfactory area of Broca's area and corresponding wall of septum pellucidium) which has olfactory, hippocampal and hypothalamic connections through it. It is an emotion centre for sexual arousal.
