Dispersion is the separation of white light into its constituent 7 colors. (Violet,Indigo,Blue,Green,Yellow,Orange,Red termed as $\bold{VIBGYOR}$)
Dispersion of light is seen in prisms. It is due to the fact that white light consists of 7 colors. The reason it gets dispersed in a prism include: 1. The Peculiar shape of prism,
2. Difference in refractive indices(plural of index) of various colors of light in different pair of media.
