BHUBANESWAR: Days after his cabinet colleague stirred a controversy by questioning freedom fighter status to Jayee Rajguru, chief minister Naveen Patnaik recognized him as first Odia freedom fighter.
“Homage to great revolutionary and freedom fighter Saheed Jayee Rajguru on (his) death anniversary. The fearless patriot who gave his life to the motherland lives in the hearts of all countrymen,” Naveen tweeted.
Initiating the tweet in Odia, Naveen also paid homage to Rajguru as first Odia feedom fighter.
On November 23, BJD veteran and agriculture minister Damodar Rout had stated that Rajguru was not a freedom fighter and his fight against the British rule in 1804 was not a freedom struggle. His comment spread like wildfire evoking strong reactions from political rivals and historians.
Speaking at Khurda Lok Mahotsav, the 75-year-old minister had said Rajguru’s fight can't be considered a freedom struggle as he rose against the British in 1804 after they broke their promise of making him in-charge of a part of Khurda province.
