Given :

➳ Mass of shell = 30kg

➳ Initial velocity of shell = 48m/s

After explosion,

➳ Mass of part A = 18kg

➳ Mass of part B = 12kg

➳ Velocity of part A = zero

To Find :

➾ Velocity of part B.

SoluTion :

⇒ Since, no external force acts on the shell, we can easily apply concept of momenrum conservation to solve this question.

⇒ Momentum is defined as the product of mass and velocity.

⇒ It is a vector quantity having both magnitude as well as direction.

As per law of momentum conservation,

\longrightarrow\tt\:Initial\:momentum=Final\:momentum\\ \\ \longrightarrow\tt\:MV=m_Av_A+m_Bv_B\\ \\ \longrightarrow\tt\:(30)(48)=(18)(0)+(12)(v_B)\\ \\ \longrightarrow\tt\:1440=0+12v_B\\ \\ \longrightarrow\tt\:v_B=\dfrac{1440}{12}\\ \\ \longrightarrow\underline{\boxed{\tt{v_B=120\:ms^{-1}}}}
