Breathing is rhythmic because at one point we inhale and stop exhale & at another point we exhale and stop inhale, but the exchange of gases is a continuous process. Continuous process can be relate to water flowing from tap. If the tap is open then the water will flow continuously means there will no any point of time where the water will stop flowing.. The exchange of gases occurs in alveoli, lungs.. In lungs exchange of gases means entering of o² and existing of CO² , there is no any point of time when the process will stop or once the o² will stop entering and CO² will start existing or O² will start entering and CO² will stop existing.. These both process continues with each other at same time the O² will enter and at same time CO² will exist...

Breathing Cycle is a rhythmic process because contraction and relaxation of our chest takes place during breathing, But exchange of gases is a continuous process because it never stops it takes place all the time.
