Answer:

Breathing cycle is rhythmic. We breath in and exhale out approximately 20 times a minute. Breathing in and out is a excretory mechanism for gases like CO2. When we talk about exchange of gases, it sure is a continuous process. The air we breath in contains O2 which is exchanged from the blood with CO2 present their and through the blood it is carried to different tissues of our body where again this exchange takes place from the cell of the tissues to the blood CO2 is uptaken and that happens at every cell. Hence Breathing is rhythmic while exchange of gases is continuous.

Hope it helps..
