Exchange of the gases is the primary and main function of stomata. The opening and closing of stomata is controlled by specialised cells called guard cells. Stomata helps the plants to take carbon dioxide in and leave oxygen out as a waste product.

Carbon dioxide enters, while water and oxygen exit, through a leaf's stomata. Stomata control a tradeoff for the plant: they allow carbon dioxide in, but they also let precious water escape.

Hope it helps.
