Miss: This prefix is used to identify a female that is not married, or has never been married. In many cases, this term can be interpreted as “little girl” This particular prefix for a woman has not been used for a long time. All assistants should refrain from the use of this word, even if you know for a fact they are not married.
Ms: Ms is used as a generic term. Ms neither means married or unmarried, but even this is not a completely neutral term. Even though this term, most neutral out of the three, can still be taken the wrong way if used in odd circumstances. An example of misuse for this term would be if a customer was indeed a female, but identified themselves as male. This could cause a conflict, and most people of this stature are normally very vigilant in upholding their decision to live as such, and subsequently would like to be addressed as they identify themselves. If you are unsure of the customer’s marital status, use Ms over Miss or Mrs. This can avoid some conflict if the customer decides to correct you on the matter.
