  • The outer membrane is smooth while the inner membrane folds over many times to form cristae.

  • Cristae increase the surface area of the inner membrane by several times. 

  • Matrix is the fluid inside the mitochondria.

Function of Mitochondria: 

  • The mitochondrion is called the "powerhouse of the cell " because it is responsible for producing energy-rich ATP molecules.

  • Cells use ATP for all their energy needs
