Mitochondria

They are called the powerhouse of the cell because they act as the sources of energy production. They are the organelles that act like the digestive systems of the cells because they taken in the nutrients break them down and produce energy from the cell. The process of creating cell energy is known as cellular respiration.

Mitochondria are very small, spherical and rod- shaped. The number of mitochondria in a celll depends on what the cell needs to do. For example, a cell like the Mushkil cell which needs more energy to perform if activities has more number of mitochondria. Both the plant and animal cells possess mitochondria.
