Lord Wellesly was the Governor-General of India during the rule of (British) East India Company. He introduced Subsidiary Alliance. According to this alliance, a British 'Resident' was stationed at the court of the rulers of princely states. It aimed at to annexe Indian States into the British Empire. In other words, it was a policy of providing military assistance to Indian Rulers.
