Epidermis: The upper or outer layer of the two main layers of cells that make up the skin. The epidermis is mostly made up of flat, scale-like cells called squamous cells. Under the squamous cells are round cells called basal cells. The deepest part of the epidermis also contains melanocytes.

Epidermis is the outer most layer , slightly flattened , living , compact i.e no intracellular spaces . Long rectangular shape.

● Functions of epidermis.

1. Protect the underlying cells .

2. It prevents desiccation or dehydration of cells .

3. It prevents the cell from the attack of pathogens.

Root \: Epidermis \:

● Root epidermis cells have outgrows roots hair which helps to increase surface for absorption of water and minerals.

Leaf\: Epidermis \:

● Leaf epidermis have a wax coat i.e cuticle . Guard cells helps in opening and closing of stomata . In between epidermis cells stomata is present.

Stem \: </p><p>Epidermis

● Suberin - Function

Suberin makes cells light and make impervious the exchange of water and air.

●Cork - Cork is a compact group of dead cells. ( It is also the outermost layer of stem).
