The story Fire on the Mountains has a very tragic ending. Nanda Kaul lived a solitary life near a mountain by a forest in Kusali. Accustomed to being by herself, she did not want to welcome anyone into her life. However, quite unexpectedly, one day her great-granddaughter Raka came to spend the summer with her. Although both of them lived life on their own terms initially, Nanda slowly began to like Raka and told her stories of their family. One day, she broke down on hearing the rape and death of her longtime friend Ila Das, a social activist. Following this, she collapsed but not before revealing to Raka that the stories she had told her were false and the truth was that she had always felt aloof. This upset Raka who had already seen her mother suffer in the hands of her forest. Angered at what she had heard from her great-grandmother, she set the forest on fire.
