Despite the difference in their backgrounds, the members of the constituent assembly were all nationalists . They had learnt from India's long struggle for independence against the British that if a country had to progress , the people had to be involved in his governance . So they all felt that India should have a democratic government. They borrowed ideas from the constitutions of other democratic countries, keeping in mind the special needs of the Indian people.
