Archaeology means the study of cultures of the past and of periods of history by examining the remains of buildings and objects found under the earth. Archaeologists explore and dig up the earth to find tools, weapons, pots, pans, ornaments and coins. These things provide us with valuable information about the past.

(i) Manuscripts-These were hand-written matter.

(ii) Inscriptions- are writings on relatively hard surfaces such as stone or metal.

(iii) Coins-Coins also have important stories to tell us about the past. Like the coins that we use today, many ancient coins had pictures and words on both sides and they depicted the battle scenes, court sceans, the figures of gods and goddesses and faces of kings and queens help us to identify about the past.

(iv) Seals- Seals too tell us much about the past.

Many seals with pictures of animals and inscriptions have been discovered from the Indus Valley ruins and other archaeological sites. Some seals from the Indus Valley sites have pictures of animals like the rhinoceros and deer.

(v) Monuments- ancient buildings that have been buried of and forgotten. There are, however, many ancient buildings of historical importance and places of worship that have not been buried underground. Such buildings that still remain today help us to know about the past.
