Vermicomposting is a process in which worms like earthworms and other soil microorganisms are used to transform kitchen wastes into black, nutrient rich humus. Earthworms are known as the ‘friends of the farmers’. They have a great role in the improvement of soil quality without using any chemical fertilizers. The excreta of earthworm are called vermicompost. It is very rich in humus. Earthworm eats soil, cow dung, household wastes, farm wastes, industrial garbage, municipal wastes etc. and converts them into vermicompost which is useful for agricultural practices and also healthy for the environment.
Green manure is obtained by ploughing the leafy small plants or vegetative plant parts left over after the harvest back into the soil. It enriches the nitrogen content of the soil and does not require any special techniques for its production.
