The financial crisis of the French crown played a role in both creating the social background to the Revolution,
- Explanation:
- The debt of the French Crown was due to the two decisions, including the intervention in the "Seven Years ' War" & "War of Independence" and underlying factors including an insufficient taxation system
- The "War of Independence" alone cost 1.3 billion livres, more than double the Crown annual revenue, with 227 million livres was expended on campaigns in one year-1781.
- The seven year war, at 1.8 billion livres, was much more expensiv and the conflict before it, cost another billion livres for the "Austrian War of Succession".
- France had an impossible dilemma: how, through such conflicts, to retain its international position as well as its status and how, with an archaic and highly inefficient system, to fund them.
- In both creating the social framework for the Revolution and generating a 'widespread" anger at the Court, the financial crisis played a crucial role, and (most certainly) forcing Louis to name the States General/ The Court was in debts which had created a crisis in combination with a "poor financial system".
- Louis tried through an "Assembly of Notables" to call upon the nobility. But the nobility refuted to help - since their influence & power had constantly fallen as a result of Louis XIV 's reign. Louis was forced to count on the Estates general. This meant that the disgruntled Third Estate, which was ravaged by weak legislation and low living conditions, was able to address their grievances and, when they did not get the expected response, the Revolution began; they rejected the king's power and formed their own government.
