In the modern theory of the atom, one of the key experiments include the discovery of the electron which resulted from the Cathode Ray experiment. In this experiment , Thomson, i.e. the conductor of the experiment had a feeling that the ‘rays’ emitted from the electron gun were inseparable from the latent charge, and thus he decided to try and prove this by using a magnetic field. This actually proved that electrons were there.
