Answer:

Explanation:

Well, it depends! Kolkata is probably the only city with almost all modes of transport!

Starting from buses to taxis to autos to local trains to metro to tram and rickshaw..phew!

I'll go point wise:

1. Metro: the oldest metro in india! The fastest mode of transport in the city (avg of 50km/h) spanning over 23 kms(new garia in south to noapara in north). If your destination is close to the metro stns, this is the best option. (Timings:6:45 till 22:43)

2 Buses: You can get a bus from anywhere to anywhere in Kolkata! There are minibuses, private buses,CSTC(govt) buses, AC buses and Volvos. Considering the huge expanse of the city, buses take a lot of time. Well for the dalhousie and central kolkata, minibuses are a good option(their fares are re.1 more than normal) for rest of the places Pvt as well as CSTC buses are good. For travelling to new places like Rajarhat and newtown, Volvos are the best option since it takes a lot of time and can be quite annoying in nrml buses(Timings: morning 4 till past midnight)

3 Taxis: Well this is the 'endangered' mode of transport in Kolkata! They are very moody and often demand 'extra' if the place is far. The best part is that they are available round the clock.

4 Autos: well auto rickshaws in kolkata are a lil different from other metros. They are not available for hire. So its just point to point. Majorly available from metro stns to adjacent areas. All routes are well defined and no one can breach the routes.

5. Rickshaw: these are available in the suburbs basically( in many places rickshaws are banned on road)

6: Local trains: well this is the most elaborate form of transport spanning all over the city to its suburbs! Two major stations control the entire system. One is howrah and the other is sealdah. Combined passenger footfall is estimated nthn less than 4-5 million a day! From 4 in the morning till 1 at night the service is available. Mostly used fr suburban office goers. Fast and cheap way to commute.

7: Jetty: Criss crossing the hooghly

8: Shuttles: Basically found in salt lake to exide area. Private cars and fast way of transport.

9: Trams: Basically used for joyrides! Fun but slow. If you have all the time in d world, Good option to explore the city

Hope this suffices
