Hydra is a small freshwater carnivore. It extends its body and tentacles to the maximum extent when it waits for its prey. As soon as some eatable substance touches its tentacles ,the prey is pierced by fine poisonous threads shot out by stinging cells called nematocysts located on its tentacles . The paralysed organism is then held by the threads. It is slowly pushed inside by the combined effort of of contracting tentacles into a large gastrovascular cavity . There it is digested and absorbed and the undigested particles are thrown out of the mouth as there is no anus.
