The Puritans were a group, who decided to break away from the Church of England and from Catholic practices, during the sixteenth century. They were English Protestants who played a key role in English culture and literature during the seventeenth century.
The Puritans advocated more ‘purity’ in religion and worship, which had its effect on English culture. As far as English literature was concerned, they used simple language and sentences, making it easier to understand religious references.
