• Earth would be a rough world with no oceans, clouds, or life if it didn't have an atmosphere. Life on earth is made possible by combination of gases and conditions in the atmosphere.
• The features and role it plays are -

1. The atmosphere's gases envelop the planet like a blanket. They maintain a temperature conducive to life. During the day, gases block sun's harmful rays and keep the heat close to the surface at night so it doesn't radiate into space.
2. Carbon dioxide is required for photosynthesis. Plants convert CO2 and water into food with the help of sunlight resulting in oxygen release. There would be very little oxygen if photosynthesis does not occur.
3. Plants provide food for other living creatures as they depend on oxygen released by plants to extract energy from their food. For this, even plants need oxygen.
