Mesophyll tissue makes up the majority of the leaves of plants. Mesophyll tissue is made up of two types of cells: palisade parenchyma cells and spongy mesophyll cells. Palisade parenchyma cells contain many chloroplasts, while spongy mesophyll cells have more empty space, though they also contain chloroplasts.

In dicotyledonous leaves there are two types of mesophyll cells, palisade mesophyll and spongy mesophyll. Palisade mesophyll cells form a layer beneath the upper epidermis whereas spongy mesophyll cells are internal to the lower epidermis
