French society was divided into three estates and only the third the estate had to pay the taxes.Society of estate was termed as the old regime before 1789. Peasants made 90% of the total population but less amount of land was owned by them for cultivation. About 60% of land was owned clergy,nobalities and higher cast of third estate.Clergy and nobality enjoyed certain privileges from like the exemption from paying taxes.They also enjoyed feudal privileges which included feudal privileges which was extracted from peasants.Church to extracted taxes called tithe from third estate.These included direct taxes called taille and indirect taxes which was added on daily commodities like salt and tobacco.
