Many types of bacteria, if environmental conditions become unfavorable (lack of water, increase in temperature, etc), will go into a sort of dormant state, called an endospore. In this dormant stage, with most metabolic activity suspended, the bacterial endospore is essentially a husk or seed of sorts that, when conditions become favorable again, will become active again. This way, bacteria can survive extreme temperatures, adverse chemical conditions, or droughts.
