During the 19th century there were many social evils exist in India. 

Caste discrimination - Discriminating people on the basis of what caste they were born or attributing their birth in a particular caste to their past births was created division. India still suffers from this evil practice but to lesser degree.

Sati - Indian soceity was deep rooted superstition in the name of religious belief. Saying was one notorious superstitious belief. Widows were compelled to follow their dead husban in the burnig ghat, and the husband and were burnt alive along with their dead husband.

Child marriage - A girl child was forced by their parents to marry an older man even before she reached the age of ten.

Girl child killing - A girl child born was actually killed as soon as she was born because she was considered a burden for the family.

 

Slavery and exploitation by money lenders - Landlords took advantage of poor poor keeping them as bonded slaves. Money lenders seized the land and properties of those who could not pay back in time.

Discrimination against women- Women were considered inferior. They were confined indoor. Education was denied to them.

Dowry system - Women are expected to give unreasonable amount of money and properties to the family of the bride. This was a burden to the poorer sections of the society. This practice continues even today by replacing the word "dowry" with "gifts".

The social evils which are still in existence must be overcomed and completely eradicated.
