France, Great Britain, and the U.S. had attained their wartime objectives in 1919. They had reduced Germany to a military cipher and had reorganized Europe and the world as they saw fit. The French and the British frequently disagreed on policy in the postwar period, however, and were unsure of their ability to defend the peace settlement. Disillusionment with war led to the practice of appeasement, or giving into an aggressor's demands to keep the peace. The U.S., disillusioned by the Europeans' failure to pay their war debts, retreated into isolationism. The Treaty of Versailles left many countries dissatisfied. Adverse conditions, such as reparations and unemployed veterans from World War I led to the circulation of new, radical ideas and solutions, such as fascism in Italy. This Fascist party, as Mussolini called it, later became a model for Hitler in Germany.

The Second World War began in the year 1939 and continued till 1945.

There are several causes that accounted for the beginning of Second World War. A few of them are listed below :

● The Peace Settlement that was signed in the Treaty of Verssailes in 1919 was faulty and is considered as the seed for a new war. This treaty was imposed by the victors on the defeated countries and was not negotiated as treaty of give and take.

● Extreme and narrow nationalism of Germany, Italy and Japan was one of the major causes for the Second World War.

(i) Rise of Hitler in Germany

(ii) Rise of Fascism in Italy

(iii) Emergence of Militarism and

Expansionism in Japan

● The formation of League of Nations in 1919 was for protecting the World peace but due to several defects it failed to serve the purpose for which it was formed.

● The Failure of the Disarmament Act mentioned in the Treaty of Verssailes was also a cause for the beginning of World War II.

● The European States continued to depend upon the secret military pacts and alliances as a means for strengthening their security which served as another cause for Second World War.
