Biotechnology is made of two words as you can see - Biology + Technology and as the name suggests, it is defined by the various combinations of components that come under these two words. This gives it an interdisiplinary nature meaning that you can explore it in a variety of fields.

Thus, all the ways of technology that can be applied to enhance, improve, research and synthesize new products for the long term benefit of agriculture (food), plant and animal life, healthcare (diagnosis and therapeutics, diseases, pharmaceuticals) and environment is defined as biotechnology.

Biotechnology is synonymous with mostly pharmaceuticals here in india. (As mostly people don’t know about it. They only assist biotechnology with healthcare).

On a broader picture, as defined above it is much more than that and is not just limited to human healthcare.

Generally, I would advise that do not take biotechnology just like that. Normally, people who could not enter the medical line opt for this field since they can’t now again try after 1–2 attempts. But, when they enter as the word suggests, you have to study technical aspects of engineering as well which people find difficult to cope with. Hence, take it only when you have some interest in engineering skills as well. Alone, pursuing this subject just because you have a liking for biology is of no use.

In undergraduate courses, mostly anywhere, all the subjects are touched. In masters and further level, you may choose your area of interest and continue.
