“Harmful substances” are substances that cause health problems when consumed.  There are many potentially harmful substances which are present commonly in the food items that are consumed every day.


Although there are harmful biological substances like bacteria and fungi which spoil the food after a limited shelf period, there are many other factors also which are considered as toxic substances.


Many preservatives are used in the food production to avoid discoloration and fermentation of the foods. Also, many artificial colors and flavors are added that can be harmful to health. These preservatives include Sulfites, Sodium Benzoate, Nitrates, BHA, BHT etc.


Apart from the additives and preservatives, foods packaged in plastics are also known to be hazardous to human health.
