Religion and Anti-Colonialism

The Vietnamese religious belief system was a mix of Buddhism, Confucianism, and local practices

The elite spoke Chinese and followed Confucianism while the peasants mixed Buddhism with traditional practices. Some even followed people who claimed to have vision of God

The Christians did not approve of the easy going attitude and their reverence of the supernatural.

1968- Scholars Revolt started by court officials to combat the spread of Catholicism and French Power mainly in Ngu An and Ha Tien which resulted in killings of over thousand of Catholics

1939- Religious movement against colonial rule called Hoa Hao started by Huynh Phu So.

Huynh Phu So performed miracles and helped the poor. He opposed child bride sale, gambling, use of opium and alcohol etc. His movement became popular especially in Mekong delta area.

Phu So was declared mad by the French, called the "Mad Bonze" and sent him to mental asylum.

1941-Eventually he was declared sane by French doctors .

In order to suppress the movement he was exiled to Laos while his supporters were sent to Concentration Camp

These kind of movement sometimes contradicted with nationalist movements and political parties couldn't influence or control these.... HOPE THIS HELPS YOU .. PLZZ MARK AS BRAINLIEST ✌️✌️
