Answer:

In economic sphere , liberalism stood for freedom of markets and abolition of state-Imposed restrictions on movement of goods & capital . During the nineteenth century , this was a strong demand of the new emerging commercial classes .

For example -

1 ) Napoleon's administrative measures had created out of small countless principalities ; a confederation of 39 German States . Since , each region had its own system of currency , weights & measures , hence , the transport of goods & capital from one region to another involved various custom duties calculations .

2 ) The measure of cloth , called elle at that time , stood for different lengths in different regions . For example - an elle of cloth would give you 54.7 cm of cloth in Frankfurt while it could give you 65.6 cm of cloth in Nuremberg .

Such conditions were viewed as obstacles by the new commercial middle classes , who in turn argued for a unified economic territory allowing unhindered movement of goods & capitals .

Following this , a custom union called Zollverein was initiated by Prussia ; which was joined by various German States . The custom union abolished tariff barriers and reduced the number of currencies from over thirty ( 30 ) to Two ( 2 ) , thus harnessing economic interests to political unification . Further , creation of a railway of network stimulated mobility . Thus , a wave of economic liberalism strengthened the wider nationalist sentiments growing at that time .
