Briefly state 2 reasons for why one place can have a colder climate than another place at the same altitude.
Answers
Answer:
1) Geographical location on the Earth
2) Placement on the land mass it belongs to
Explanation:
1) Because the Earth is spherical in shape, the Sun's rays hit different regions with differing intensity. The Poles receive sunlight lesser than the equator, because the Equator is closer to the Sun than the Poles.
Hence two places can differ in their climates if one is situated closer to the Equator than the other. The climate of the first place A will be hotter and wetter than the second place B which will be colder and drier, even if these two places are at the same altitude.
2) Consider two cities P and Q on a large landmass surrounded by water. P is a coastal city while Q is a metropolis smack dab in the center of the landmass. P will be cool and humid while Q will be hot and probably dry - if it's far enough from the water and if there is a mountain range obstructing the rain clouds from entering the city.
P will be cool and humid due to the direct effect of the sea on the city. The metropolis Q is far away from the shore and does not feel the moderating effect of the sea on it. Hence these two places, though at the same altitude, differ in their climates because of their placement on the landmass they belong to.
Hope this helped! :D
