Agriculture is the major non-industrial sector of India since ancient times. In Tamil history it is depicted that the agricultural and irrigation system was very much developed during the rule of the Chola Empire.

Thanjavur is known as the granary of the South India. The water of the Cauvery River was used in the agricultural purposes of this region. Various lakes and wells were made by the Chola rulers to support the agriculture of that place. The sides of the Cauvery River were also repaired during the reign.
