Answer:

If the soil is fertile, then the population starts to settle there as they want fertile soil for cultivation. On the other hand, if the soil is infertile one, then less or no cultivation is possible there. So the fertility of soil affects distribution of population.

For Example:- People prefer plains more than plateau and mountainous regions for settlements as plains have far fertile soil than plateau and mountainous regions soil.
