Purines are a class of chemicals that have a two-ring structure. One six-atom ring containing four carbon atoms and two nitrogen atoms is linked with a five-atom ring that contains three carbons and two nitrogens. There's an entire class of molecules built around that foundation, with different groups of atoms attached to the outside. The two purine bases in DNA and RNA are named adenine and guanine.

✔️Purines consist of a six-membered and a five-membered nitrogen-containing ring, fused together.

✔️ Purines

Adenine = 6-amino purine

Guanine = 2-amino-6-oxy purine

Hypoxanthine = 6-oxy purine

Xanthine = 2,6-dioxy purine

✔️Adenine and guanine are found in both DNA and RNA. Hypoxanthine and xanthine are not incorporated into the nucleic acids as they are being synthesized but are important intermediates in the synthesis and degradation of the purine nucleotides.
