the child wanders away from his parents while admiring the variety of things the fair has to offer and when life he notices that his parents are missing, he starts crying. a man tries to calm him by showing him the same things and asking what he would want, but he shakes his head no and keeps on saying that he wants his parents. this is the contrast. 'The things that once fascinated the child, now repelled the child'.
