Jerome K. Jerome paints George's character with a comical hue. George works in a bank and he goes there to sleep from nine to four during the day pokes fun at the kind of work he does at bank. Then on Saturdays they wake him up and bring him out at two. Though he is a sensible person and thinks practically, his eccentricity leads to funny situations in the story. The incident when he wakes up at three in the morning owing to forgetting to wind his watch also puts him in the funny situation. When he is trying to pack butter, he amuses the reader by the way he forgetfully kept it on chair and it got stuck on the back of Harris. They went around in the room looking for it but of no use. Similarly his playing banjo leads to a disappointing experience for his landlady, others as well as his friends for he turns a soulful song to a mournful one while playing. Trying to open pineapple tin, he first tries to open it with a pair of scissors and narrowly escapes scissors hitting his eye. In the inn when he climbs at the back of a chair to have a closer look at the trout and falls down funnily. In short George adds to the humorous narrative of the author.
