1. Elements of British culture - Both countries having been colonized by the UK in the past drive on the left, enjoy tea in the afternoon and have educational/political/judicial systems similar to the UK.
2. Class divisions - Unfortunately, both countries have huge disparities in wealth and many people live in absolute poverty while others (in many cases just a few miles away) live in mansions with servants. Both countries also have a sizeable middle class living similarly to western standards, something that is rarely mentioned.
3. Family oritented societies - In both countries, family plays an important role. This is more visible in India but most people also live with their parents until having their own family in South Africa, as well. Similarly, family is always considered when taking important decisions.
4. Community feeling - I don’t if this is my perception only but compared to Europe there is more interest in community work, volunteering, providing for the others. There are tons of options for community work in both countries and a huge number of people involved in volunteer work, ranging from nature/wildlife protection to providing shelters for those in need.
