Bishop played a pivotal role in transforming the convict into a good human being again. The Bishop did through his kindness and love. If we want to change any bad human being into a good human, it is possible only through love and understanding. The Bishop treated the convict with respect, care and understanding. He knew he had been someone who had suffered a lot in his past; his suffering had turned him into a callous human being. The Bishop's understanding turned out to be quite true.  

The real transformation occurred when the Bishop saved him again from being imprisoned by Gendarmes. He told them he had gifted his candlesticks to him. The truth was, the convict had stolen them and sneaked out of the Bishop's house in the middle of night

The people in the Church send for him whenever they have problems or are in trouble and the Bishop rushes to their assistance in all kinds of weather not being worried of his personal comfort. The Bishop even sold sold all his possessions but for  for a pair of silver candlesticks that was given to him by his dying mother so as to help the poor. His sister Persome who is short-tempered person and resents the Bishop's such kindness.
  • The Bishop is also a very caring person that he wraps his comforter around the maid Marie when she is about leave to her home after work, into the cold night air. The Bishop’s innocence and naivety often earns the wrath of his sister Persome. However, the Bishop always says " if people like to me they are poorer not I"
  • The Bishop also very kind generous towards the convict, who enters the Bishop's house  stealthily and threatens him with a knife even after receiving food and hospitality from the Bishop. The convict who sees the the silver candlesticks at the Bishop's place decides to steal them, despite the Bishop being generous towards him, and escapes in the night from the Bishop's house
  • However, when gendarmes catches the convict with the candlesticks and bring him back to the Bishop’s house, the Bishop states that he had  given the candlesticks to the convict. It was the Bishop's compassion that transforms the convict.
  • Being a very compassionate person, the Bishop laments, that there is so much suffering in the world, and he is unable to do much. The Bishop is also a profoundly pious and religious person. He advises the convict to lead a good life as "this poor body is the Temple of the Living God".
