- However, when gendarmes catches the convict with the candlesticks and bring him back to the Bishop’s house, the Bishop states that he had given the candlesticks to the convict. It was the Bishop's compassion that transforms the convict.
- Being a very compassionate person, the Bishop laments, that there is so much suffering in the world, and he is unable to do much. The Bishop is also a profoundly pious and religious person. He advises the convict to lead a good life as "this poor body is the Temple of the Living God".
