The title of the play 'The Dear Departed' is ironical. The grandfather, Mr. Abel Merrywether is not dear to his own daughter also. Both of them only pretends that they love him. In the beginning, we came to know that grandfather has passed away but we did not die or departed. Hence the title of the play is ironical.
