Tribals are displaced and forcefully evicted from their forests lands due to various reasons:

Explanation:

  • The first reason can be in the name of development. The construction of various developmental projects like roads, highways or dams have forced the tribals out of their lands.
  • Example: The construction of Sardar Sarovar Dam on river Narmada has displaced many tribal communities.
  • The second reason can be for the commercial exploitation of natural resources. Many tribal areas of Chottanagpur plateau in the states of Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh is rich in natural resources like coal, mica, bauxite, etc. For mining purposes these tribal communities are forced to vacate their lands.
  • The third reason can be in the name of conservation projects. The Forest Policy of our country has so far failed to identify the role played by local communities in saving and wellbeing of the forests. Instead they are being evicted out from their homeland in the name of conservation.
  • Example: Many tribal groups belonging to Gond tribes were forced out of the forests from the areas which comes under protected zone of Kanha National Park in Madhya Pradesh. But many reports suggested that these tribal groups were integral part of the forest as they protected the tigers from the poachers.
  • Tribals generally depends on forests for their livelihood but once they are not allowed to use the forest products, they would have to move out in search of some other means of income. This has also caused large scale migration of tribal communities.
