here when mrs jordan refers to 'fatal mistake', she wants her sister to think that she did not do the right thing by not sending for a doctor as soon as she thought that abel was 'gone'. she wants to convey that if she had sent for the doctor at once, then she might have saved his life. and in a way she wanted to blame her sister for the death of their father
