According to Mara's narration, the spot was sacred because Hanuman stood there on the day Lakshmana lay in a dead faint in the battle-field at Lanka. Hanuman was guided by divine omens and came to the spot where the king stood, and went up the mountain to find sanjeevini, with which he revived Lakshmana.
